This month, the Literary Odyssey Book Group will be reading ‘How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents’ by Julia Alvarez. A stunning and poignant story about a wealthy Dominican family immigrating to the Bronx, the Garcia girls grapple with hiding their heritage and trying to immerse themselves in American culture. Published in 2004, ‘How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents’ is an apt and important story for our times.
‘She has beautifully captured the threshold experience of the new immigrant’ – The New York Times Book Review; ‘In telling this story, Alvarez treats the subjects of immigration, exile, Hispanic culture and the American Dream with a sensitive and often irreverent touch’ – The Washington Post
The Literary Odyssey Book Group meets every last Wednesday of the month. We are a small group but we love inviting new faces and thoughts. There will be wine and a yummy treat to accompany our chat – we’d love to see you there!
