Sir Tom Devine is one of Scotland’s most esteemed scholars and popular historians. Independence or Union, published in March 2016, adds a brilliant new chapter to his chronicling of Scottish history in critically acclaimed titles such as A Scottish Nation, To The Ends of The Earth and Scotland’s Empire. We have no doubt Independence or Union will also be celebrated for its timely, insightful, and indeed necessary contribution to current debate.

Independence or Union convincingly argues that there can be no relationship in Europe’s history more creative, significant, vexed and uneasy than that between Scotland and England. From the Middle Ages onwards the island of Britain has been shaped by the unique dynamic between Edinburgh and London, exchanging inhabitants, monarchs, money and ideas, sometimes in a spirit of friendship and at others in a spirit of murderous dislike. This seminal work explores this extraordinary history in all its ambiguity, from the seventeenth century to the present.

In the words of Niall Ferguson “Devine’s scholarship is state of the art … if you are after answers to the big questions of Scottish history, Devine is your man”. With the United Kingdom under a level of scrutiny unmatched since the eighteenth century Independence or Union makes an essential, fascinating contribution to contemporary discourse.

Sir Tom Devine joins us for an evening of discovery and discussion, unpacking the book’s finer points, and taking audience questions, followed by a book signing.
