On October 21st, 1967, more than 100,000 people assembled in Washington DC to demand an end to American involvement in the Vietnam War, at least half of them proceeding to cross the Potomac river and march peacefully on the Pentagon. Amongst them was Norman Mailer, whose vivid, insightful, provocative account of these events is widely considered one of his best books. Enlivening conventional reportage with the techniques of fiction, Mailer recounts his own participation as though he were a character in a great historical novel. The result is an outstanding example of 1960s "New Journalism", and this discussion should provide an appropriate way for the Group to mark its controversial author's centenary. RPJ
