Andrew McPherson on William Gillies

This November we are thrilled to welcome Andrew McPherson (Professor Emeritus in Sociology at the University of Edinburgh) and Sandy Wood (Curator of the Royal Scottish Academy) to hear about Andrew's William Gillies: Modernism and Nation in British Art.

Published to coincide with the RSA exhibition on the life and legacy of William Gillies, Andrew's biographical research uncovers a new side to Gillies’ development as a painter, especially his portraits and still lives.

2023 marks 150 years since William Gillies passed. What better way to celebrate it than coming to hear from the author of a book described by artist Alexander Moffatt as ‘The book I’ve eagerly awaited for almost a half century.’?
