On the Booker Prize shortlist this year are Real Life, the story of a biochemist at a Midwestern university; This Mournable Body, in which we meet a woman at breaking point in Harari; The Shadow King offers the untold story of women soldiers in 1930s Ethiopia; The New Wilderness and Burnt Sugar are two strikingly different explorations of mother-daughter relationships; and, lastly, Shuggie Bain introduces us to a young boy handling life with an alcoholic mother in Glasgow. The winner is announced a little later this year, on November 19th, so there's plenty of time to judge for yourself.
